Winter Wellness Guide: How to Thrive in the Colder Months
When winter rolls in with its chilly days and long nights, it’s tempting to hibernate and put self-care on pause, but the colder months are a great opportunity to focus on your well-being. We spoke with the team here at Grounded Labs and put together a quick list of everyone’s favorite tips for staying healthy and happy all winter long:
1. Get Sunlight!
Personally, I'm not an early riser, so in the winter I get 8 hours of sunlight on a good day. Seasonal affective disorder lamps can be a good way to get a bit of extra supplemental sun. Modern research has shown that starting the day with sun exposure is critical for overall health.
2. Optimize Your Sleep
I'm pretty bad at falling asleep, and one of the things that helps me most is using silly looking blue-light blocking glasses at night. I picked up a slightly more stylish pair from Gunnar Optics this week which will hopefully result in me being teased less for wearing them. I use blue light blocking glasses for the last 2 hours of the day before bed.
Getting my mind to slow down for sleep can also be a challenge. I've tried many different teas and supplements like Chamomile and Melatonin, but they've never had much effect. What I have found useful is guided Yoga Nidra or body scan meditations right before bed. I personally use the insight timer app!
3. Stay Active (Yes, Even When It’s Cold!)
Movement is key to keeping your energy up and your mood bright. Bundle up for a brisk walk or try indoor activities like yoga or strength training.
4. Care for Your Skin
Combat winter dryness by moisturizing daily and using a humidifier to keep indoor air hydrated. Don’t forget SPF—even in winter!
5. Boost Your Vitamin D
With shorter days, we often miss out on sunlight—a natural source of vitamin D. Incorporate vitamin D-rich foods like salmon, eggs, and fortified cereals into your diet. Consider a supplement if needed (but always check with your doctor).
6. Stay Connected
Cold days can feel isolating, so make an effort to connect. Call a friend, plan a cozy movie night, or join a community activity to keep your spirits high. Research shows that community and connection is the best predictor of both lifespan and overall happiness.
7. Relax with Oasis Mini
Of course, we have to recommend picking up an Oasis Mini to bring a little calm to your days. Whether it’s setting the mood for your evening wind-down or creating a peaceful vibe in your home, it’s the easiest way to add a little serenity to the season. Bonus: it fits perfectly next to your mug of hot cocoa. 😉
Winter doesn’t have to feel like a season of survival—it can be a season of self-care. Take these tips to heart, and you’ll be glowing through the frost.
